Free eSIM Trials in 2026: Nomad, GigSky and Yesim Checked

Last checked: Nov 2026 · Updated November 4, 2026 · 8 min read · By the Signal Atlas research desk

A trial eSIM is the cheapest way to learn the installation process and confirm your phone works before a real trip. We checked the official pages for three well-known offers. Spoiler: only two are actually free.

Nomad: 1 GB free for 3 days

Nomad's trial landing page offers new users a free 1 GB eSIM valid for 3 days, with hotspot tethering, in 80 popular destinations. You redeem it in the Nomad app and can install it up to 15 days before your trip; if you don't use it, it activates automatically 15 days after redemption.

The catches: Nomad's help center says the trial is limited to one per account and one per device, even if you create a new account. And users who redeem the trial lose eligibility for other first-time promotions and discounts (such as referral discounts). If you were planning a big first purchase with a new-customer discount, weigh that up.

Note: Nomad's own pages give different destination counts — 80 on the landing page, 76 in a help article, 48 in an older blog post. We quote the landing page; check the app for your destination.

GigSky: 100 MB free for 7 days

GigSky's free-offering page lists a standard trial of 100 MB valid for 7 days in 125 countries, with no card required, plus a 500 MB / 7-day India trial and a 100 MB cruise trial. GigSky's consumer terms describe the 100 MB plan as available to all new users since 15 February 2024 and say GigSky can change or end it at any time. The free plan is only available through the GigSky mobile app.

The catch: 100 MB is enough to test installation and send messages, not much more. Treat it as a test, not trip data.

Yesim: a low-cost trial, not a free one

Yesim's trial page offers first-time users 500 MB of high-speed data for 1 day in 50+ countries, with activation immediately or within 365 days of purchase. Yesim's own blog is clear that it is not free: it costs about $0.60 (shown as €0.50), and the data amount varies by country (its blog lists 200 MB for Canada and 100 MB for China and the UAE, for example).

How to use a trial well

  1. Install the trial at home on Wi-Fi, exactly as you would a real plan (steps here).
  2. Leave the line off until you're in a covered country, or the validity clock may start.
  3. Use it to confirm your phone, your settings and the provider's app — then buy a real plan sized to your trip.
  4. Follow the "one per person" rule. Creating extra accounts to claim more trials breaks providers' terms.
